The Stanway Shotokan Karate Club has been run by Sensei Hazel Maxwell (3rd Dan) since 1999. Sensei Maxwell teaches three classes a week at the moment.
The focus on each session is Fitness, Self Defence, Control and Awareness. The main teaching is Shotokan Karate, there may be some bag work, weapons and self-defence included. Through commitment and hard work you will be given the opportunity to progress by taking Gradings (Belts) Starting with RED then WHITE, YELLOW, ORANGE, GREEN, BLUE, PURPLE, BROWN and BLACK. Gradings with involve basic techniques and set Katas for each belt. Students are also invited to attend self-defence courses to improve their knowledge of weapons and techniques and an opportunity to socialise. Sensei Maxwell has trained with some of the best instructors of Kung Fu, Ju Jitsu, Bo Jitsu , Akido and of course Karate, and tries to bring back some of the knowledge and skills acquired when teaching her own students. Sadly in today’s society, self-defence should be considered essential, so that in the event of an unprovoked attack, an individual can confidently defend him/herself and not become another victim. Karate is great for fitness, making friends and having fun! It does not have to be Blood, Sweat and Tears!
